Fredy Perlman (1934-1985), along with his comrades at Black and Red Press in Detroit, was a key figure in the midcentury American anarchist and left-communist tradition. The Press’s translations of European anti-state communist texts, including The Society of the Spectacle, profoundly shaped anarchism in America. Perlman’s own writing in Black and Red and in journals such as Fifth Estate, also make him, in his own right, one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century.
Join us for a group to discuss some of Perlman’s most important writings about capitalism, alienation, nationalism, technology, and revolutionary practice. We will begin with his short 1969 text “The Reproduction of Daily Life,” which you can find on the Anarchist Library. Read beforehand and come ready to discuss!
